Data Masking in TDM VS Data Masking Transformation in PC

    New Member

      hi Team,

Please help to understand the difference in the data masking techniques offered by Informatica.

Informatica's Test Data Management is a product that supports Data Masking, Data Profiling, Data Subsetting.

Within Informatica's Power Center Development tool, we can create Data Masking transformations.

      If possible, explain with examples.

      Thanks.

          A slightly simplified response:

The Test Data Management suite (TDM) for non-SAP systems (TDM for SAP is very much different) is primarily a tool with its own user interface which enables you to analyse data (using IDQ, Informatica Data Quality), define masking rules, apply them, and define and execute masking jobs (using PowerCenter). Under optimal circumstances you can use it without knowing anything about PowerCenter and/or IDQ because the user interface can keep the intricacies of these products "hidden" from you.

Technically TDM uses several different techniques to perform the masking actions in PowerCenter. One of these techniques is the so-called Data Masking Transformation (DMO = Data Masking Object). It's used by TDM itself for many purposes, and you may embed it on your own in PowerCenter mappings which run exclusively on the machine(s) running TDM. This can, for example, be necessary if you need to mask certain kinds of mainframe databases and files.

          Regards,

          Nico

            hi Nico,

Thank you very much for the detailed information. Based on your reply, my understanding is, Data Masking using TDM is different from Data Masking Transformation within Power Center Development tool. Correct me if I am wrong.

In Persistent Data Masking within TDM, how can we mask when the data is distributed in multiple tables. PFB the example.

            Before Masking:

            Customer Table:

            CustID FirstName LastName

            1001     Jane         Doe

            1002     Chris        Tucker

            1003     Samantha  Johnson

            CustomerAddressInfo Table:

            AddrID  CustID  CustFirstName CustLastName

            101       1001      Jane                 Doe

            102       1002      Chris                Tucker

            103       1003      Samantha         Johnson

If we use Power Center Development tool, we need to create 2 different data masking transformations to mask & load these 2 tables in downstream DB.

Using TDM Persistent Data Masking, can we mask the First Name & Last Names of these 2 tables & expect the masked data to be same in both tables?

            After Masking:

            Customer Table:

            CustID FirstName LastName

            1001     Mercy         Tucker

            1002     Catherine     Pike

            1003     Simon         Cage

            CustomerAddressInfo Table:

            AddrID  CustID  CustFirstName CustLastName

            101       1001      Mercy                 Tucker

            102       1002      Catherine             Pike

            103       1003      Simon                  Cage

You may create DMOs for a PowerCenter mapping yourself, or you can configure a persistent data masking job in the TDM GUI and have TDM create the respective mappings and workflows for you. In both cases you configure these processes accordingly (namely to produce repeatable masking results), The difference is just that in TDM you can fairly easily apply as many masking rules to each table as you want; using DMOs in PowerCenter you have to do that all on your own manually.

May I suggest that you ask your Informatica sales people for a TDM demo or maybe even a Proof Of Concept in your environment. This way you will see yourself how complex certain steps are and how easy other steps can be conducted with TDM. Just as a side note, in my experience it is very often necessary to have a solid understanding of PowerCenter when working with TDM; it's far easier to understand and use TDM if you are familiar with PowerCenter, also debugging and performance analysis are far easier if you understand PowerCenter well.

              Nico
